Jamestown
Jamestown today is much different than it was in colonial times. It was settled in 1752 and it was founded in 1607. The colonists had bad weather, problems with the Indians, not enough food and a lot more problems, but they stayed in the new colonies.
First English colony in America to survive and become permanent. It was founded in 1607.
Jamestown
King James I gave a group of business men the right to go to the New World and start a colony in 1606. In December they were on a ship and heading for Jamestown.
| The Indians214 people went to America. They got there on May 14, 1607. They were attacked by the Algonquins, a Native American tribe. They did not like the English people being on their land. The colonist fought with them. They had to fight them several times, but the colonist stayed.
| FORT JAMESCaptain John Smith was the leader of the colony and they built a fort and some other buildings. They did this to protect their new colony. They also found some Indians that were friendly, like Powhatan. they wanted to trade with them. In 1609 the winter was really bad and some of the colonist wanted to go back to England. But they never got to go home because only 60 of the 214 colonist lived through the winter.
