The colonial times started 70 years aftetr Columbus discovered America. They were the years between 1585 and 1776. The colonies were split into 3 diffrent sections or Colonial groups: the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies. Settlers from all over the world came to the colonies for many different reasons. Some came for religious freedom, some came for adventure, some came to make money and some came to get out of debtor prison. The 13 colonies were founded between 1607 and 1732. The first was Virginia in 1607 and the last was Georgia in 1732. The 13 colonies started out with a very small number of people but by the year 1770 there were more than 2 million people living in the colonies.

The 13 original colonies were: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Goergia. Each of the colonies had their own characteristics, but they were grouped together by their location, the reason they were founded and the things that they produced. Most were there because they wanted to practice their own religion, but some came just to make money. No matter what the reason, they had to work hard to survive.
