James Oglethorpe
James Oglethorpe was the founder of Georgia and the leader of the military. He was from England. He was born on December 22, 1696 he died in 1785. When he was 18 years old he joined the military and two years later he went to a military academy in France. King George II gave him the right to run this new colony.

Prisoners from England were sent over to live there. Georgia was the 13th and last colony to be founded. | James Oglethorpe was the reason that Georgia was founded. Oglethorpe was a rich leader who spent his life helping the poor. He thought that the colony of Georgia would be a better place to send the poor people. Many of them owed money. They had a prison called debtors prison and that means that if someone barrowed money and they did not pay them back they would be put in prison.
| In 1715 there was a war between England and Spain in Georgia. Two years later, Sir Robert Montgomery tried to end the fighting. He also tired to start something called the Margravate of Azilia. This was just what we call cities today. In 1724 Jean Pierre Purry wanted to start a settlement named Georgina, in honor of King George. Nine years later, in 1733, the colony of Georgia was started.
