Rhode Island
Rhode Island's first permanent settlement was started at Providence in 1636 by an English man named Roger Williams. A small group of people left Massachusetts Bay Colony because they wanted freedom of worship God they way they wanted. They had a lot of trouble with the other colonies trying to take their land. So Roger Williams had to go to England to ask for permission to be a colony. They received permission and they were allowed to worship the way they wanted and also to govern themselves. Rhode Island was the first colony that had these rights.
