Pequot war -1636 to 1637- Many of the settlers bought land along the river from the Mohegan Indians. By 1637, trouble began between the settlers and the Pequot Indians. The Indians wanted to take the lands that had been purchased from the Mohegans. Captain John Mason led the colonists in a war with the Indians. They won that war and the right to the land.

Connecticut played an important role in the starting of self-government in the New World. When the King sent someone from England to take away their charter they refused to give up authority to New England. This became known as the Charter Oak incident because they say that the Kings messenger took the charter when it was dark and hid it in an Oak tree. Two other English colonies were merged into the Colony of Connecticut: Saybrook Colony in 1644 and New Haven Colony in 1662.
